GIAN programme
Madurai: The Department of Materials Science, School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University, conducted a two-week Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) programme on ‘Solar cells, materials and modelling,’ in collaboration with the Institute of Energy Technology (IFE), Norway, from May 29.
The course consisted of two modules — basic concepts on solar cell materials and hands-on training of fabrication of photovoltaic device and basic instructions on modelling.
Participants were given training in materials modelling via the supercomputers of Norway. The international faculty was Smagul Karazhanov, Senior Scientist, Institute for Energy Technology, Instituttveien18, Norway, who is involved in scientific research related to theoretical study of materials to be used in photovoltaic technology, batteries, and hydrogen storage.
The valedictory session of the programme was held on June 9. P. P. Chellathurai, Vice-Chancellor, in his valedictory address, highlighted India’s tremendous potential to exploit solar power for achieving self-sufficiency in energy generation.
He appealed to Dr. Karazhanov to have a memorandum of understanding between Madurai Kamaraj University and IFE to facilitate students and staff exchange and knowledge exchange. M. Jeyanthinath, course coordinator, proposed a vote of thanks. Teachers and scholars drawn from institutions of higher learning from all over India participated in the programme.
