The current economic system is dependent on economic growth in terms of quality and quantity. Since the beginning of the industrialization, this growth has led to an increasing use of resources. Economic growth and resources consumption cannot be decoupled under any circumstances. Hence, concern for resources and energy is a relevant issue for the future and new technologies to develop the novel products are to be focused. Furthermore, the ability to produce a steady flow of successful new products consistently is one of the key factors in corporate success. The customers demand products that bring together innovation, quality, immediate availability, safety, low cost and even service. In that context, the design activity in charge of elaborating, evaluating and validating candidate products face the complex problem of optimizing upon the product's life cycle conflicting parameters relating to heterogeneous points of view.
The role of industry and academia is vital and hence conferences to share the knowledge and experience in the field of product design, development and life cycle are relevant. PLMSS is a bi-annual international conference organised in association with ADA, DRDO, NAL, HAL and IISc. PLMSS 2014 is the fourth in the series of a conference that aims to bring researchers, developers and practitioners from academia and industry together to enable collaboration and knowledge sharing. The past three conferences were organised by ADA (PLMSS -2006), NAL (PLMSS-2008) and PSG College of Technology (PLMSS-2011), respectively with international participants of academics and professionals. Support is being sought from Department of Scientific and Industrial Research - Government of India, Department of Space - Government of India and other Government research and development organisations.
