Anna University to train faculty on teaching
Engineering has come to revolve around research and innovation:
VC
PERUNDURAI: Anna University, Coimbatore, intends to train engineering
college faculty on teaching, Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan
has said.
He said, “Engineering graduates join the teaching profession
with very little idea or exposure to training, which the University
intends to address by setting up a college.
“The college would be on the lines of academic staff college
in universities dealing with arts and science degree programmes
and expose engineering faculty to teaching methodologies. Dr.
Radhakrishnan said the move was part of the efforts to upgrade
the quality of faculty, on whose development the University
was concerned about. The current practice of conducting week-long
or 10-day faculty development programme was not sufficiently
rewarding and more need to be done.
Doctoral programmes
Further in its efforts to upgrade the faculty, the University
proposed to encourage the faculty to pursue higher studies,
particularly doctoral programmes.
“We intend to have at least 1,000 faculty with Ph.D. qualification.”
The Vice-Chancellor then linked the students’ progress
with the faculty pursuing research.
“Engineering is no longer about teaching and learning,
or pass percentage, or success in placements either. It has
come to revolve around research and innovation. And, for us
to stay relevant in the technology race, research is the way
to go,” he said and wanted the students to come up with
new products.
Continuing on students’ education, he said, “We
produce just degree holders, who have completed education mostly
through rote learning. They have hard hardly any scope for using
creative talents to innovate. And, this must change. “To
tap the students’ creative potential, he added, the University
would come up with suitable programmes.
