Vice-Chancellors to meet in Chennai

MADURAI: A meeting of Vice-Chancellors of all universities in the State will be held at Chennai on February 19 to discuss budget allocation for higher education for 2008-09.

The Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi has convened the meet to get their views on various issues pertaining to admission, infrastructure, courses, curriculum and job placement, P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, said here on Saturday that the University Grants Commission (UGC) too had called for a meeting of Vice-Chancellors in New Delhi on February 21 for their presentation of reports on Tenth Plan expenditure.

Budget for higher education
According to G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, the Minister held a meeting with academicians with regard to budget for higher education “and he is now taking inputs from the heads of universities.’

Since the latest thrust was on providing access to higher education to all, several issues connected to that would come up for deliberation, he said.

Meanwhile, official sources said that apart from academicians and Vice-Chancellors, the Minister for Higher Education also had plans to have separate meetings with Principals and student representatives so as to get a comprehensive picture of the requirements. Plans of opening more arts and science colleges in districts were also expected to figure at the meetings.

Virtual universities
The Madurai Kamaraj University Vice-Chancellor attended a meeting in New Delhi on Friday under the aegis of Consortium of Educational Communication, a wing of the UGC.

“The emphasis was on developing ‘virtual universities’ with thrust on deploying technology-based teaching in rural areas. This would benefit students who cannot afford to go over to towns and cities,” Dr. Maruthamuthu said.
