University plans to include students in academic committees
Proposal to be placed before Syndicate for its approval
TIRUNELVELI: The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) administration
has planned to include students’ representatives in the
Board of Studies and in the Standing Committee on Academic Affairs
with the objective of increasing the students’ participation
in academic activities, particularly in curriculum design.
Delivering the presidential address in the orientation-cum-workshop
for student leaders of the university on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor,
MSU, Cynthia Pandian, said the students’ council was the
primary vehicle for students’ participation in governance.
The intention behind mooting these proposals was to give greater
role for the students in curriculum design and other related
activities. These two proposals would be placed before the next
Syndicate meeting of the university for its nod and based on
its decision the extent of role to be played by the students
would be decided.
She also urged the administrations of the affiliated colleges
to include students’ representatives in their governing
council so that they could understand the problems of the college
administrations.
Students’ council
Asserting that their election to students’ council would
give them ample opportunity to explore their talent and knowledge
to ultimately give the best to their institutions, the teachers
and also to fellow students, Dr. Cynthia appealed to the students’
leaders to channelise their ethical behaviour in all situations.
“It (election to the students’ council) expands
your social, cultural and academic interests and augments your
experiences to prepare you for the real world. This opportunity
teaches you skills such as communication, decision-making, conflict
resolution, ethics, diversity etc. You, through your words and
deeds can generate more leaders. Hence, you, being the leaders
of the students, have to uphold values and ethics much required
for leadership,” she said.
Former Chief Secretary of Tripura, B.S. Raghavan, said that
students should develop the qualities of clear thinking, effective
communication and transforming the words into deeds without
any compromise. Since the quality of positive thinking was lacking
among the younger generation, they should improve this quality
too.
The Member Syndicate, MSU, V.M.A. Surendra, the national secretary
of All India Federation of University and College Teachers’
Organisations, James Williams, and others felicitated.
Group discussion
A group discussion for the students’ leaders on ‘Resolving
conflicting situations in institutions of higher learning’
was also held.
