Reforms in Ph.D. programme
- Course work to be suggested
- Vice-Chancellor’s decision will be final
TIRUCHI: While making course work in three papers – two
in the field of research and one in related area – necessary
for research scholars of arts, science and languages, Bharathidasan
University has, however, decided to consider the recommendation
of doctoral committee on the quantum of or the need for course
work.
As per the reforms approved by the Standing Committee on Academic
Affairs, the doctoral committee would suggest course work for
12 credits in areas where a candidate needs research inputs.
If the committee feels that the candidate has the requisite
knowledge to pursue research even without the course work, it
could make a recommendation to that effect to the Vice-Chancellor,
whose decision would be final.
A candidate in geographically distant area who would be guided
by university faculty for part-time research is required to
identify a co-guide or coordinator in a nearby research institution
as an external guide with the approval of the university.
These candidates are required to spend one month a year in the
university either at one go or in two spells of 15 days each,
working on their research under the supervision of the main
guide.
Candidates living abroad or in very far-off places could keep
the doctoral committee posted on the progress of their research
through video-conferencing.
Yet, they will have to spend 15 days in the university under
the supervision of the main guide, every year.
Observer status
By according the Head of the Department concerned the status
of an observer in the doctoral committee of colleges, the university
intends to avoid repetition of research topics.
If the HOD does not possess a doctorate, a university faculty
member would perform the particular role.
The Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said that these reforms that
would take effect from the ensuing academic year were necessary
to infuse quality into research.
