SRM University plans automotive laboratory
- Lab to focus on emission, combustion, noise
- Varsity’s curriculum to be restructured soon
Chennai: SRM University plans to set up an
automotive laboratory and a centre for excellence in computer
embedded systems on its campus in Kattankulathur.
University Vice-Chancellor P. Sathyanarayanan said the automotive
laboratory would be set up on the lines of the Sloan Automotive
Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), U.S., at
a cost of Rs.4 crore. The lab’s chief advisor would be
Wai K. Cheng, an MIT professor and a member of the SRM International
Advisory Board.
Discussions were held with industries and research organisations
, including TVS Motors, India Pistons and Pune-based Automotive
Research Association of India (ARAI). The lab’s focus
would be on engine combustion, emission, noise and friction.
Some faculty members from SRM would be trained at ARAI and MIT.
The centre of excellence for computer embedded systems would
be set up with the help of Carnegie Mellon University, U.S.
About Rs.2 crore would be invested in this facility.
Mr. Sathyanarayanan said the university’s curriculum would
be restructured in the forthcoming academic year to provide
a wider choice for students, offer inter-disciplinary courses
and allow transfer of credits from and to foreign universities
when students participated in exchange programmes.
Faculty members would also visit universities abroad to study
teaching practices and the curriculum there.
