Go prepared for engineering counselling
Coimbatore: Now that the rank list for engineering applicants
is published, the next step for them is to prepare for counselling.
But, why at all prepare for counselling? It is not an interview.
For those who have such thoughts, the orientation at the Government
College of Technology organised by the Coimbatore Chapter of
Computer Society of India on Sunday, would have been an eye
opener.
A complicated process could not have been explained in a simpler
manner, as was done by P. Narayanaswamy, Professor and Head
of the Department, Computer Science, Anna University, Chennai.
Students and parents were in rapt attention when he spoke for
over an hour on “How to Face the Engineering Counselling
of Anna University”
With counselling to begin on July 3 (for sports quota), the
orientation could not have been timed better. Mr. Narayanaswamy
started off with what candidates should do from the time they
received the call letter. “Remember to carry originals
of all relevant certificates. Do keep at least three sets of
photocopies at home. The call letter, Plus Two and X standard
mark sheets, transfer certificate and community certificate
(not required for Other Castes) should be kept handy,”
he said.
Details should match
He insisted that the details in all the certificates should
the same. “If your name is spelt differently in any one
of the certificates, you will not be allowed to attend the counselling,”
he cautioned. Since there was time for the counselling, he urged
candidates and parents to make necessary corrections with the
authorities concerned regarding change in spelling, etc. Those
who had begun UG courses in arts and science colleges were told
to get bonafide certificate from the respective colleges that
the original certificates were in their keep to be produced
in place of originals at the counselling centre.
Outstation candidates
Outstation candidates were asked to reach Chennai a day earlier
in order to avoid delays caused in travel. “Never go late.
Reach the university an hour earlier.
They will not entertain you if you reach even late by a few
minutes,” he said.
Make your choice
Then he went on to give step-by-step instructions to the candidates
once they reached the centre (see box). He advised them to be
well prepared on the college and course options before the day
of the counselling.
“There need be no cause for panic if you are well prepared.
There is no time limit for selecting your course.
You can take your time and decide without any confusion. Vacancy
will be based on community reservation (OC – 31, BC –
23, BCC – 3.5, BCM – 3.5, MBC – 20, SC –
18 and ST – 1).” Each candidate is permitted to
take along a parent into the counselling hall. He warned of
touts who promised seats. “Do not believe anybody. Nobody
can get you a seat.. Everything is as per the computer generated
information and nobody can meddle with any information. You
will get what you have to,” he said.
